How to connect Instagram to CommenSense (and which accounts work)

Which Instagram accounts can I connect?
Instagram only lets apps manage comments and messages for professional accounts. Meta, which runs Instagram, says its API works for "businesses and creators" and doesn't need a Facebook Page to be linked (Meta's documentation).
| Account type | Can connect? |
|---|---|
| Business | Yes |
| Creator | Yes |
| Personal | No. Switch it to a professional account in the Instagram app first. |
The Connect page in CommenSense currently says "Instagram Business account". It means any professional account, Creator included.
How do I connect my account?
Go to commensense.in/auth and create an account.
Enter your first name, last name, email and a password, then select Create account. No card is needed.
Open the verification email and select the link in it.
Then sign in with your email and password. If the email hasn't arrived after a few minutes, check your spam folder.
On the Connect Instagram page, select Connect Instagram account.
The page lists what CommenSense will be able to do with your account:
- See your basic account information
- Read and send messages, and read and manage comments
- Publish posts for you
- Read your post and account stats
Log in to Instagram and allow every permission.
Instagram shows its own permission screen. Leave every permission switched on: if one is turned off, CommenSense can't connect.
Wait for Instagram connected.
CommenSense takes you to your dashboard a couple of seconds later. You're ready to set up rules and automations.
Can I connect more than one Instagram account?
Yes, depending on your plan: Free and Basic include 1 account, Pro 2 and Business 3. To add one, open the account switcher at the top of the sidebar and select Add another Instagram account. Each account has its own rules, automations and contacts. Your monthly comment scans are shared between them.
An Instagram account can only be connected to one CommenSense login at a time.
What do the connection errors mean?
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Missing required permissions: … | A permission was switched off on Instagram's screen. | Select Try again and leave every permission on. |
| This Instagram account is already connected to another CommenSense account. | Someone already connected it, possibly you with a different email. | Sign in to that CommenSense account and disconnect it there, or use a different Instagram account. |
| Account limit reached | Your plan's account limit is used up. | Upgrade, or disconnect an account you no longer need. |
| Authorization was denied or cancelled | You closed or declined Instagram's screen. | Select Try again. |
How do I check the connection is still working?
Open My account at the bottom of the sidebar, then Settings. Under the account that's currently open, What CommenSense can do lists each permission. Select Re-check to test the connection with Instagram.
If it says you need to reconnect, select Reconnect, then Continue to Instagram. Your rules, automations and history are kept. CommenSense also tells you on Home when an account needs reconnecting.
What happens if I disconnect?
Selecting Disconnect in Settings removes the account from CommenSense and deletes its comments, automations and history there. It can't be undone; connecting the account again starts from scratch.
Disconnecting doesn't change anything on Instagram, and it doesn't remove CommenSense's access there. To do that as well, remove CommenSense from the connected apps in your Instagram settings.
