What are comment scans and Ask AI credits?

How many do I get?
| Plan | Comment scans | Ask AI credits | Instagram accounts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 100 a month | Not included | 1 |
| Basic | 1,000 a month | Not included | 1 |
| Pro | 5,000 a month | 1,000,000 a month | 2 |
| Business | 25,000 a month | 5,000,000 a month | 3 |
Both are shared by every Instagram account on your login: two accounts on Pro share the same 5,000 scans.
If you pay quarterly or yearly, you get the whole period's allowance at the start: 3 months' worth for quarterly, 12 months' worth for yearly. You can use it at any pace during the period.
Where can I see how many I have left?
Plan usage, at the top of Home, shows the comment scans you've used out of your allowance and the date they reset. The same meter is at the bottom of the left sidebar.

Ask AI credits are shown on the Ask AI page, as the share you have left.
What uses a comment scan?
Every new comment someone leaves on your posts uses one scan, once, when it arrives. CommenSense reads it even if you haven't switched on any hide rules, because the same reading also powers the purchase intent, questions and complaints figures in each post's Insights.
These don't use scans:
- your own comments, from the Instagram account itself;
- replies inside a comment thread;
- comments from people you've restricted (they're hidden or deleted straight away instead);
- comments you import with Sync comments;
- story replies, automations, re-runs and Ask AI.
So the number to plan around is how many comments your posts get in a month, not how many automations or rules you have.
What happens when my comment scans run out?
New comments stop being read by the AI until your scans reset. That means:
- The five AI hide rules (Offensive language, Negative comments, Links, Spam and Sarcasm) pause.
- Your keywords and Comments without text keep hiding comments as normal.
- Automations keep running. Comment to DM and Reply to comment automations match on your keywords, not on the AI, so they still reply and send DMs.
- Comments that arrive in the meantime aren't added to the post's Insights figures, and they aren't read later when your scans reset.
Home warns you before that happens. At 80% you see Comment scans running low; at 100%, Comment scans used up, with the date they reset.
How are Ask AI credits counted?
Ask AI reads up to the newest 500 comments on the post you pick and answers your question about them. Credits depend on how much it reads and how long its answer is, so a post with more comments costs more.
- Before you ask, a line under the Ask AI button tells you the minimum: "Uses at least … credits for … comments." The answer adds to that.
- As a rough guide, one question about a post with around 200 comments uses about 30,000 credits. On Pro, that's about 30 questions like that a month.
- If you don't have enough credits for the comments it would read, Ask AI tells you before it runs, and nothing is used.
Ask AI is included in the Pro and Business plans.
When do they reset?
At the start of each billing period, your allowance starts again from zero. Anything you didn't use doesn't roll into the next period.
- Free plan: every month, on the day of the month you signed up.
- Paid plans: when your plan renews: monthly, quarterly or yearly, depending on how you pay.
The date is under Comment scans in Plan usage.
What happens to unused ones when I upgrade?
If you move from one paid plan to a higher one, or to a longer billing period, your unused comment scans and Ask AI credits come with you. They're added to the new plan's allowance and last until its first renewal. Nothing carries over from the Free plan.
What if I need more?
Upgrade from Plan usage on Home. Your new allowance starts as soon as the payment goes through, so a busy post doesn't have to wait for the reset.
